Welcome to the website of the Irish Specimen Fish Committee. The ISFC's main aim is to verify and publicise the capture of specimen (i.e. trophy) fish caught on rod and line by anglers in Ireland, both in freshwater and at sea. The Committee also ratifies Irish record rod caught fish.

FISH IDENTIFICATION

Some of the important identification features which should be photographed for different species are shown in the Central Fisheries Board publication Irish Sport Fishes - a guide to their identification which can be downloaded free.

Awards Presentation

The annual presentation of awards to anglers whose claims were accepted during 2009 will be held in
Red Cow Morans Hotel Naas Road, Dublin 22
at 2.30pm on Saturday 20th February 2010.
All Irish based anglers who are due awards are invited to attend. It is hoped to present specimen awards to UK anglers in the UK later in 2010 and also to Dutch and Belgian anglers at VISMA 2010.

Freshwater eel

Freshwater eel has been suspended from ISFC list of eligible species until 2012 to comply with a new bye-law on eel conservation. Find out more here.

Genetic fingerprinting of Shad and Smoothhound 2009

Shad and smooth-hounds will be identified by genetic fingerprinting from 2009 onwards. Find out more here.

Genetic fingerprinting of Coarse Fish in 2009

Genetic fingerprinting will be the standard approach to identification of roach, rudd and their hybrids from 2009.Roach/rudd hybrids have been added to the list of eligible species.

Other news

Black bream have also been added to the listings. The specimen weight for rudd, rudd/bream, dace, anglerfish, black sole, brill, dab and garfish have been reduced. A further review of the remaining species on the listing will be carried out in 2010 and 2011. Progress has been made on the use of length as a proxy for weight for some shark and ray species. ISFC will continue working on this area in 2010.
