Press Release, 19th November 2008

All Specimen Fish Claim Forms must be returned by the 30th November

The Irish Specimen Fish Committee (ISFC) would like to remind all anglers, charter skippers and guesthouse owners to return any outstanding specimen fish claims to the ISFC, c/o the Central Fisheries Board, before the 30th of November, to enable it to compile its keenly anticipated annual report for 2008.

Details of new Irish records and all specimen fish taken by anglers over the course of 2008 will be published in the report, which will be available free of charge in early January 2009.

When a specimen claim has been ratified, all details of the specimen fish are published in the annual report. The successful angler is also recognised at the annual awards day and will be presented with a certificate and a badge at the annual awards event.

In addition to providing first rate information for anglers, the annual specimen fish report is also used to promote angling tourism and, most importantly, to accurately document all specimen fish captured that year. The Irish Specimen Fish Committee celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2005 and many anglers refer to the old records for guidance when it comes to choosing venues for capturing specimen fish.

Please return all forms to the Irish Specimen Fish Committee, c/o the Central Fisheries Board, Swords Business Campus, Balheary Road, Swords, Co. Dublin.

Notes to Editor:

Founded in 1955, the Irish Specimen Fish Committee is an independent voluntary body, representative of angling interests in Ireland, whose principal function is to verify, record and publicise the capture of large (i.e. specimen) fish caught on rod and line by anglers in Ireland, both in freshwater and marine waters. The Committee also ratifies Irish record rod caught fish. The ISFC coordinates and administers the unique specimen awards scheme which is designed to recognize any angler who catches a specimen fish. Successful anglers are awarded a certificate and a commemorative badge. Specially commissioned silver medals are presented to captors of record fish and special awards are also made to captors of multiple specimen fish (on a cumulative basis). The ISFC offices are based in the Central Fisheries Board’s offices in Swords.

The Central Fisheries Board (CFB) is a statutory body operating under the aegis of the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources and was established under the Fisheries Act 1980.

Its principal functions are to advise the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources on policy relating to the conservation, protection, management, development and improvement of inland fisheries and sea angling, to co-ordinate and provide specialist and support services to the Regional Fisheries Boards and to advise the Minister on the performance by the Regional Fisheries Boards of their functions.
